Traditionally Speyside and Islay have been perceived as far apart in style as location. Speyside, so they say, produces smooth, fruity, occasionally spicy malts, whereas the same people suggest that Islay whiskies are pungent and smoky… One of the most interesting developments over the last few years has been the unwillingness of certain distilleries owners to stick to this ‘traditional’ stigma. We have had non-peated whiskies from Islay since living memory, but now we are seeing peated Speyside whiskies starting to gain in popularity. This tasting takes a look at six whiskies, tasted blind, and challenges those present to discern the Islay from the Speyside and to ask whether regionality is as important as the choice of materials, equipment and attitude…
As always the tasting is designed to be fun and enjoyable for all levels of whisky drinker, and is not a lecture. You will almost certainly learn something new every time, but if you don’t walk out with a smile on your face then there is something wrong! This is a whole new set of drams so fear not if you were present last year, and as always the quality is extremely high and the entertainment level is set to 11!
